Distance Education

In Queensland, there is the option to educate children at home through one of the many Distance Education (DE) schools available. In 2024, there were 20 DE schools to choose from, and aside from Autism Qld, there are no special requirements for enrolment in any of these schools.

There are 7 State DE schools that align more closely with traditional academic and time-logged requirements. Additionally, there are 13 Private DE schools, one of which is only currently available for primary school students (Pinnacle Academy), and is the only non-religious private DE school, aside from Autism Qld.

There is an option of fee exemption in the State Based DE schools for medical enrolment. Some private DE schools have payment plans, contact the school to discuss.

All DE schools vary in their delivery, feedback, materials, and cost. There is no single “best” DE school; choosing the right one depends on identifying your child’s needs and your own priorities. Factors to consider include cost, delivery method (online vs. workbooks), social opportunities, location, recorded classes, and more. Your role is as a supervisor, to ensure that your child is attending and completing the required work, just as they would in a traditional school setting.

DE schools operate like mainstream schools, and most offer an ATAR upon completion of Grade 12. However, it’s important to note that there are alternative pathways to tertiary education that do not require completing Year 12.
